Go to the class Wikispace page. Once on the page, go to “Childhood’s End Unit”, then “Contact Discussions”. Answer the prewriting discussion prompt by going to the Discussion Tab and posting your thoughts. Here’s what it says on that page:
Pre-writing journal:
Before we start watching Contact, think about your belief in life beyond our planet. Do you believe there IS life on other planets? In journal form, discuss your beliefs and provide specific information from scientific reports, history, news and other data you can think of. If you need to do a quick search on the internet to help support your beliefs, do a quick search so that you're posting quickly.

Using the discussion tab on THIS PAGE, type your response within the next five minutes. Then read and respond to three of your peers, supporting their ideas or constructively arguing against them. This is a quick response, so just type in a few ideas and send them along. Spend 15 minutes replying to your peers so we can start the movie.

After you’ve posted, you’ll need to get a copy of the movie CONTACT with Matthew McConaughey and Jodie Foster. Watch the first hour of it which is what we’ll get to on Friday. Then stop it and complete the second journal on the “Contact Discussions” page. Scroll down from the prewriting journal and you’ll see the link for “Science and Religion Journal”. Complete the prompt as instructed.

Monday, October 26, 2009
We spent the whole day watching the movie, but will still have a little to do on Tuesday.

Tuesday, October 27, 2009
Tuesday we will finish the last 20 minutes or so and answer the final journal prompt on the Wikispace page. Then, go to the class Wikispace page under the Childhood’s End unit, and look for the link for Arthur C. Clarke Biography search and discussion. Choose TWO of the topics and do research on them. Create the PowerPoint slide as if you were in class working with a partner.
New Objective List:
We also read Chapter one of the Prologue for Childhood’s End. Call the school for a copy of the novel for you to read. Complete the worksheet for the Prologue using this information to help:
Ø Time period is 1975 during the Cold War and the race to space between the US and Russia
Ø Reinhold works for the US, as does Colonel Sandmeyer
Ø Konrad works for Russia, as does Griegorovitch

Homework is to do the research on your topic for Wed. Read Chapters 2 & 3 for Thursday and 4 for Friday.

Wednesday, October 28, 2009
On Wednesday, partners will review their research and create two slides per topic for the biographical sketch of our author. We will also watch the link for the YouTube interview: Arthur C. Clarke’s final interview. (See Wikipage for the link and watch it.) Respond to the prompt listed on the discussion tab.

Read Chapters 2&3 for homework, plus complete the sections of the Part 1 worksheet from the reading.
